Die schwedischen Schwarzmetaller Witchery gingen gerade mal im im Frühjar 1997 aus der Asche der Band Satanic Slaughter hervor. Heute, gut zwei Jahre später hat man sich mit der Veröffentlichung des Debüts "Restless and Dead&quo

Die Veröffentlichung Eures zweiten full-length Albums „Dead, hot and ready“ steht kurz bevor. Was versprichst Du Dir davon ? Denkst Du, Ihr werdet damit an den Erfolg von „Restless and Dead“, sowie „Witchburner“ anknüpfen können ?

Keine Ahnung, wir versuchen nicht in solche Dimensionen zu denken. Wir alle sind mit dem neuen Album sehr zufrieden, und ich denke, daß es eine Weiterentwicklung gegenüber ‚Restless and Dead‘ ist. Ich weiß, es klingt jetzt sehr klischeehaft, aber ich denke es ist bis jetzt unsere beste Veröffentlichung; wäre dies nicht so hätten wir das Album nicht veröffentlicht. Ich gehe davon aus, mindestens um die 200 Millionen Alben davon zu verkaufen. Wenn nicht, bin ich zutiefst enttäuscht !

Wofür steht eigentlich der neue Albumtitel ?

Wir halten uns an die gute alte Witchery-Tradition Alben-Titel zu finden indem wir klassische Metal-Titel modifizieren, und wir haben diesmal Pretty Maids ins Visier genommen. Wir alle finden deren 83er Album ‚Red hot and heavy‘ ziemlich gut, also veränderten wir den Titel etwas, damit er besser zu Witchery passt. Der Titel läßt sich gut mit dem Cover verbinden. Ben Wrangle (der Skelett-Typ) verkörpert all diese Adjektive.

Euer Erfolg ist in der Tat beeindruckend. Gerade einmal 1997 gegründet und mittlerweile schon zu einer wahren Größe in der internationalen Black/ Thrash Szene herangereift. Wie erklärst Du Dir diesen Entwicklungsprozess ?

Als wir begannen fehlte der Szene eine Band wie Witchery. Ein Grund weshalb die Leute uns mögen ist, daß man uns anhören kann, daß wir Spaß beim Spielen haben. Einige Leute haben sogar behauptet, daß ‚Restless and Dead‘ eine der besten Party-Alben der letzten Jahre sei, und die Leute brauchen einfach etwas Abwechslung zu all den ernsten und bösen Bands die es heute gibt.

Obwohl Du erst kurze Zeit nach Gründung der Band hinzugestoßen bist, kannst Du mir bestimmt dennoch erläutern, welche Ziele und Ambitionen Witchery damals wie heute verfolgen.

Nein, wir machen noch immer alles um Spaß zu haben, allerdings sind wir ernsthafte Musiker – doch wir nehmen uns selbst nicht ernst. Wir sind hier um Spaß zu haben, und wir hoffen, daß sich dies in unserer Musik widerspiegelt, und daß dieser Funke auf die überspringt, die unsere Musik hören. Wir möchten einfach den best-möglichen Metal spielen.

Was bedeutet es Dir als Musiker, mit Witchery zum „Best newcomer of 1998 at Suomi Finland Perkele’s Metal Awards“ gewählt worden zu sein ? Immerhin spielst du mit „Mercyful Fate“ in einer der wohl etabliertesten Metal Bands überhaupt.

Der Suomi Finland Perkele „Best Newcomer-1998“ Award war das Beste was ich in meinem Leben jemals bekommen habe. Das kommt daher, daß wir nicht wußten ob unsere Art von Musik überhaupt jemand mögen würde. Das war bei uns reiner Instinkt. Und wenn man dann so einen Preis bekommt weiß man, daß was richtig gemacht wurde.

Gibt es bei „Dead, hot and ready“ eigentlich eine Art lyrisches Konzept (zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt liegen mir nämlich keine Texte vor) oder handelt es sich hierbei schlichtweg um eine Homage an die alten Metalgötter ?

Aber jetzt mal ernsthaft… Haha… Du hast recht, wir lobpreisen die Metal Götter ! In jedem Song ist eigentlich eine kleine Horror Geschichte die nur darauf angelegt ist, etwas mehr Atmosphäre in die Musik reinzubringen.

Wodurch unterscheidet sich Witchery Deiner Meinung nach vom Gros der Black/ Thrash Bands, die plötzlich überall aus dem Boden sprießen und den momentanen Trend als Sprungbrett zum Erfolg nutzen wollen ? Immerhin existiert Witchery auch erst seit gerade mal zwei Jährchen….

Wir machen die ganze Geschichte weil es uns Spaß macht und weil wir es müssen, aber wir erheben keinen Anspruch darauf die böseste Band der Welt zu sein. Im Vergleich zu den meisten anderen Bands dieses Stils ist unsere Musik etwas energischer und echt. Wir hatten von Anfang an nie vor, die alten Thrash-Bands zu kopieren, wir spielen sie einfach weil wir damit aufgewachsen sind; daher wird diese Musik für uns immer eine Inspiration sein.

Welche Rolle spielt Freundschaft bezogen auf die Band ? Ich hab‘ einmal gelesen, Witchery funktioniert nur, weil ihr alle enge Freunde seid.

Alles basiert auf Freundschaft. Wir spielen halt Musik wenn wir zusammen Spaß haben wollen. Ein schöner Gegensatz zum ewigen Feiern, hehe… Und ohne dieses Bedürfnis Spaß haben zu wollen gäbe es Witchery gar nicht.

Witchburner‘ von Witchery, um die Verkaufszahlen hochzujagen

Welchen Stellenwert hat bei Euch ein Konzert ? Soweit ich weiß, ist Euer Auftritt beim diesjährigen Wacken-Open-Air Eure Deutschlandpremiere. Habt Ihr Euch für dort ertwas ganz besonderes einfallen lassen ? Man spielt schließlich nicht alle Tage auf einem derart wichtigen Festival…

Wir haben gerade eine US Tour hinter uns, bei der wir für Emperor den Opener gemacht haben. Das war ein riesiger Erfolg, was uns bestätigt, daß wir eine sehr gute Live-Band sind. Wir freuen uns schon auf’s Wacken Festival, denn es ist ziemlich cool auf solchen Veranstaltungen zu spielen. Nicht nur, daß wir spielen dürfen, Nein, wir dürfen auch mit den anderen Bands abhängen und ihrer Musik lauschen. Was Special Effects angeht sieht’s düster aus, denn gerade dies ist es bei unserem Auftritt gerade nicht. Aber wir werden die beste Show liefern, zu der wir in der Lage sind.

Wie sehen Witchery’s Zukunftspläne aus ? Ich habe gehört, ich spielt mit dem Gedanken ein Live Album mit dem Titel „On a broomstick to hell“ zu veröffentlichen. Wo soll dieses denn aufgenommen werden und was wollt ihr damit bezwecken ?

Unsere Planung sieht erst einmal eine Tour durch Europa vor (später dieses Jahr), damit wir Leute treffen können und vom Publikum direkte Reaktionen mitbekommen. Danach geht’s wieder ins Studio, denn wir haben schon genug Material für das nächste Album. Also wird das Live-Album noch etwas warten müssen, wohl bis ins nächste Jahrtausend…
